We applied the authoritarianism and libertarianism system from the previous week with this week’s lecture. Authoritarianism is more into dictatorship. It’s against individual freedom. People believe that government should have all rights. In contrary, libertarianism clings with freedom ideology. People believe that everyone should have the same right. Censorship takes place in authoritarianism while libertarianism is free from any pre-censorship.

There are pros and cons for both authoritarian and libertarian system. With authoritarianism, country’s reputation will be protected. Besides, pornography, racist and other explicit sites would be blocked. Moreover, the action of downloading songs and movies illegally can be prevented and Internet crime such as cyber bullying will be reduced. With healthy control over the population by restricting inappropriate sites, children will not be exposed to inappropriate contents.

Cons of authoritarianism would be people are disconnected from the rest of the world. We will be disadvantaged due to lack of privilege whilst the rest of the world has all the freedom with Internet usage. Besides that, it is violation to human rights and infringement to freedom of speech. If the government introduces such system, the public would be against it and this issue would possibly result in a conflict. Furthermore, News or any information wouldn't be spread easily if they blocked social media sites such as Twitter, Facebook and etc.

Pros of libertarianism would be personal freedom, economic freedom and political freedom. With libertarianism rule, media has no compulsion to publish anything. Libertarianism grants liberty. It increases creativity and productivity of a country. Cons of libertarianism would be abuse of free speech can’t be prevented. Talk shows is a good example that shows abuse of power. Moreover, kids will be exposed to inappropriate content if censorship is not applied.

Media of different countries such as North Korea, Canada and Malaysia practice different kind of system. North Korea practices Authoritarian political system. The media of North Korea is strictly controlled by the government. Therefore, censorship takes place in publication of news. Media couldn’t undermine established authority or disobey the rule set by government. Negative news of government will be banned thus media is subordinate to established authority. Publishers who disobey the laws will receive punishment such as imprisonment or hard labor.

Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) administers boardcasting and telecommunications in Canada. Media in Canada has much more freedom in press. However, they practices tax laws to limit competitiveness from foreign counties. Media in Canada is concern about the federal government’s support and subsidy given by government for internet-based news and print media.

Malaysia’s major media is either owned by the government or United Malays National Organization. Malaysia is claimed as libertarianism yet prior censorship takes place in publishing of news. Therefore, the freedom has been criticized and questioned by many people. If they change the system, Malaysia would no longer follow the libertarian system and no longer would be able to claim themselves as a democratic country. It would be the total opposite.
